Service Projects - Making a Difference in Our Community
On-Going Projects
- Zonta/Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Peel Partnership - We are proud to sponsor
the Women of Peel Luncheon Series, in conjunction with our
sister club in Brampton/Caledon. Zonta supports BBBS of
Peel in their mandate of providing services and programming
to enhance the self esteem of girls experiencing difficulty
or stress and enabling them to reach their potential.
- Young Women in Public Affairs
Award - A Mississauga secondary school
student is recognized for community service and women’s
advocacy. The winner proceeds through an international award
competition. Please see Scholarships
Page for details.
- Zonta Meadows Park
- Our stewardship of this Mississauga park (410 Rathburn
Rd. West) began in 1991 as our Club’s 25th Anniversary
project. Two special interest areas are found in this park:
- The Helen Horn Wildflower
Meadow - established as a memorial
to a fellow Zontian. Through this we convey our respect
for women colleagues and our commitment to good stewardship
of the natural environment.
- ZAP - Zonta Accessible
Playground - an amazing barrier-free
playground opened in June 2001 that invites all to play
regardless of their abilities. Please
see ZAP page for details and photographs.
- Young Women’s Anti-Violence
Workshops at Mississauga secondary schools
with Z-Clubs. Young and dynamic facilitators from METRAC
(Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women
and Children) conduct interactive, empowering student workshops
on topics of dating violence, sexual assault/date rape or
emotional abuse. These opportunities assist students to
raise awareness, foster discussion, introduce existing community
resources, and motivate students to work towards a violence-free
society.
- Zonta Classic Golf Tournament
- Good friends, good food and good golf - a winning
combination! This annual tournament organized with Oakville
and Brampton/Caledon Zonta Clubs, raises significant funds
for breast cancer research and support. Please
see details on Special Events page.
- Our Place Peel
- Annual donation of holiday season gifts for homeless youth
who receive services from this important community shelter
program
